How To Bathe Your Puppy For The First Time – Dog Health Care
Bathing a puppy can be a real challenge, especially when your pup uses every resource to thwart your attempts to get them clean. However, in order to stay on top of good dog health care, it is important that you bathe your puppy on a regular basis. The way you bathe your puppy matters because you are teaching them, here and now, exactly what bath time will be like for the rest of his days. Before turning the bathwater on, make sure you have everything you need conveniently positioned next to you. These include a coat-conditioning spray (for long-haired dogs) and a natural-bristle brush during times of heavy shedding. Also get a generously-sized towel to wrap your pooch in later. There will be lots of water splashing around shortly, so put some old clothes on. The entire affair will work better if your puppy is hungry; so do not feed him 6 hours before the bath. If you call your puppy over and give him some treats he will be well behaved in the bath. Remember, you want this to be fun. Now it’s time for a thorough brush-and-comb. Remember that tangled fur is hard to remove when wet, so always brush before the water gets turned on. Rub conditioner on the puppy’s fur and massage it in.
Pay attention to the areas behind your dog’s ears. Remember to praise throughout this process and stay happy, keeping the treats flowing. Show him his toy and let him play with it a little in the tub before you turn on the water. Use something gentle on a puppy’s head, like a baby shampoo. Don’t let the water touch the dog until you are sure it is the right temperature. Once checked, gently soak the puppy’s coat with luke warm water. Massage some shampoo into the dog’s fur. Providing you have a gentle brush, this can be used to massage the shampoo in all over the puppy’s coat. When you are sure you’ve rinsed out all the soap, do it again. You’ll always find that there’s more soap to get out! Lastly, condition the fur and rinse – then your dog is ready to be wrapped up in a towel and dried off.
